Swedish classical guitarist Mattias Jacobsson Schulstad made his recital debut at age seventeen, and has since released a recording and performed in concerto, chamber and recital settings. His recording Invocación explores the Spanish composer Tárrega, and introduced the notion today that Tárrega was inspired by Chopin. The recording, produced by David Frost, was named Editor's Choice by Gramophone, and Album of the Week by WQXR and Classic FM.

Mattias has performed Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and with Copenhagen Classic (principals from Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Danish National Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Danish Opera). An advocate of new repertoire, Mattias is collaborating with Enrico Chapela on a concerto for guitar and orchestra, and has premiered two concertos, by Jakub Ciupinski and Ryan Francis, to date. He has also given the North American premiere of Chapela's Melate Binario, for solo guitar.

During the 2013 centennial celebrations of Benjamin Britten, Mattias recorded Come, Heavy Sleep, (‘Slow and quiet’) from Britten’s Nocturnal after John Dowland Op.70, in a collaboration between Albert Augustine and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He also performed the work at Strathmore.

Born near Stockholm, Sweden, Mattias began playing the guitar with Erik Möllerström in the Nacka Municipal School of Music, where he studied between 1994 and 2003. At fifteen, he enrolled at Södra Latins Gymnasium, studying with Bo Hansson (2000-2003), followed by studies at the Malmö Academy of Music with Göran Söllscher and Gunnar Spjuth (2003-2006) and at the Juilliard School (2006-2008). Mattias plays strings by Albert Augustine, on “Erik”, a 1971 Ignacio Fleta e hijos guitar.

Mattias ... has an innate feel for the music of Tárrega.
